BECOMING A CLIENT

The Cornerstone’s recovery program is available for anyone who seriously wants to remain clean, sober, functionally happy, and productive for the rest of his or her life.

It is important that those wishing to become residents at The Cornerstone understand that they will be living in a tight knit family environment. This often (and hopefully) will bring out the best and worst behaviors of the resident, enabling the counselors and peers to assist in the necessary changes that need to take place for recovery.

There have been many people who have entered The Cornerstone with the idea that they were coming to a country retreat where they could satisfy their obligations to the legal system, appease their family or employers, or just escape the pressures of life. Unless the resident is able to eventually understand that the only reason they are in the program is to grow in recovery, they will quite likely soon leave. The intensity, number of groups, and the written/reading assignments are often a deterrent to those who enter the program without the strong desire to reclaim their lives for their own benefit.

Although good reading and writing skills are useful to the applicant for the  Phase Recovery Program™ and 12-Step assignments, they are not a must. What is necessary is the willingness to accept new direction, a craving to learn, and a dedication to change. Many residents have entered the program with a limited educational background and, with the help of peer support, peer pressure, and assistance from the counselors, have soon begun to complete assignments and make excellent progress in their recovery.

All legal problems must be resolved prior to entry in the program. In the case of an applicant who is to be Court ordered to complete the program, it is necessary that confirmation is received that no incarceration time will be imposed on the graduate after completing The Cornerstone. It may be possible to assist residents with lesser offenses while they are in treatment as long as incarceration is not an issue. The program has been working with numerous western state Courts for nearly a decade and has been recognized as an acceptable alternative to incarceration. An applicant currently having legal difficulties that might require incarceration must be referred to the program by an attorney, probation officer, or parole officer.

Dual-diagnosed applicants may be accepted in the program as long as their primary diagnosis is for alcohol and/or other substance abuse. Please consider that The Cornerstone might be inappropriate for those applicants who might find the stressful environment, the intensity and internalization of the program, and the self discipline difficult to endure because of their mental health issues. Generally, psychotropic medications may be allowed as long as they are stabilizing the applicant and will not hinder the client's ability to participate in the program work.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order for The Cornerstone to discuss financing or any other aspects of entrance into The Cornerstone program with a third party, it is necessary for the prospective client to provide us with a signed Consent for Release of Confidential Information form. A separate form must be completed, signed, and witnessed for each individual the prospective client would like us to communicate with. You can access a copy of this form by clicking here and then printing as many copies as you will need. After we receive it, either by mail or fax (See Contact Us), we will be able to discuss your situation with the third party. Unless you provide us with the third party's phone number, they will need to call us. Remember, The Cornerstone must have a separate Consent for each individual or agency you would like us to communicate with.
