Group
Activity Descriptions Attitudes/Process
Group: All clients share what has come up for them
in doing their treatment work, the attitudes they are experiencing, and
how it is affecting their treatment progress. Book
Study: A time for clients to work, under the supervision
and with the assistance of staff, on their individual program work, in
either the Phase Recovery or 12-step workbook. Devotionals
or Study: A time of spiritual connection including
devotional readings and music. Clients who choose not to participate in
this optional spiritual activity will use this time for doing program work
from the Phase Recovery or 12-step workbook (see Book Study). Group
or Education: The Treatment Staff use this flexible time
slot to present relevant information to clients that is not otherwise
specified in the program schedule or to address specific events that may
have affected the therapeutic community. Educational topics include
chemical dependency-related health issues, domestic violence, boundaries,
self-esteem, grief & loss, etc. In-house
12-Step Meeting: Under the supervision of staff, residents
conduct their own 12-step meeting utilizing NA or AA materials. Life
Skills: Utilizing the “Life Skills International”
curriculum, clients read about and discuss ways to improve their
communication skills and handle anger issues in healthy ways. Organized
Recreational Activity Or “Make-up” Group: This week-end
activity is designed to provide the residents with opportunity to
experience fun-filled activities without the need of alcohol or drugs.
Weather permitting; clients may be transported to nearby recreational
areas or local parks. Should this activity take place, for whatever
reason, during the week this weekend time will be used to make up for any
missed program time. Outside
12-Step Meeting: Clients, accompanied by staff, attend an
open NA or AA meeting in the local community. Meetings are gender-specific
(men or women only). Parenting
Class or Book Study: Clients participate in the nationally
recognized “Parent-to-Parent” video curriculum, facilitated by a
certified Parent-to-Parent trainer. The series is presented twice a week,
which permits all of the eight sessions to be completed in four weeks.
Clients who have completed the series may sit in to review the lessons and
join the discussions or may use the time to further work on their program
curriculum under staff supervision. (see Book Study) Positive
Affirmations: All clients are expected to participate
in this time of group interaction. Client go around the room sharing
positive affirmations, and words of encouragement, recognizing each
other’s treatment progress. Presentations:
Individual client responses to selected assignments in the Phase Recovery
workbooks papers are shared and discussed in a facilitated group setting, Relationship
Video: “Hidden Keys to Loving Relationships”
eighteen-part video series featuring nationally known teacher Gary Smalley
provides clients an opportunity to learn about the dynamics of
interpersonal relationships and to improve the skills needed to make their
interactions more satisfying and fulfilling. Group time also includes
discussion lead by staff facilitator. Therapeutic
Video or Education Group: Each two and three-quarter hour
session focuses on one of several rotating subjects including building
blocks to healthy success, understanding the dynamics of co-dependence, or
developing habits for effective living. Additionally from time to time Weekly
Wrap-up: Each client shares, in a staff facilitated group,
about the progress made, the challenges faced, and the lessons learned
during the past week. Additionally, each client declares their goals for
the upcoming week based on their weekly Personal Recovery Plan. |
